Street Parties, although obviously not the answer for every community or Neighbourhood Watch, can be a very effective way of encouraging neighbours to get to know one another. It helps bind the local community together and maintain interest and support for the NW scheme.
The children are entertained by the games while the adults have a natter and also join in with the games and the stalls. Sitting out on a sunny Sunday afternoon with a plate of food, a glass of wine and having a pleasant chat with the neighbours is really quite pleasant.
What does one actually do at a street party.
The NW holding the annual event organises children’s games that you might see at traditional school fetes e.g. Jenga, Tombola, Hoopla, Shove ½, Tinball, Quiz, Buzzer, Bagatelle, Raffle, Plants & Book stalls.
Buffet-type food can be provided.

- Register an application for a street party with Nottinghamshire County Council.
Go to https://secure.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/traffic-and-travel/events-registration/
This dept requests three months notice. - Inform the road about the closure, pointing out that access will be allowed. If any households do have objections, these must be conveyed to the NCC.
- Consider obtaining £5 million public liability insurance. Formally constituted neighbourhood watch schemes can benefit from events insurance from the umbrella national NW scheme at www.ourwatch.org.uk
- Prepare a drawing showing the road to be closed and the roads crossing and adjacent to it. The NCC may advise what road signs and barriers are required.
- Remember to hire the road signs – we use a local tool hire shop.
- These instructions are meant to be helpful and are given in good faith but no guarantee is given as to the accuracy of the information herein and no liability is accepted.
- There are costs:- Entertainers, musicians etc will charge fees. These costs can be covered by a combination of a small annual subscription to the NW scheme and/or charging small amounts for the stalls and games.
